On Thursday, March 2nd, CEERES in partnership with the Franke Institute for the Humanities, the Film Studies Center, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, the Prague Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International, and the Consulate General of The Czech Republic in Chicago, are presenting a series of events that celebrate the life and work of Czech director and animator, Karel Zeman who is best known for his fantasy films, An Invention for Destruction, Journey to the Beginning of Time, and Baron Munchausen, that combined live-action footage with animation.
The afternoon’s events will begin at 3:00 pm at the Franke Institute for the Humanities with a lecture by Malynne Sternstein (Slavic Languages and Literatures). Included with this lecture is a screening of a short film by Karel Zeman. Inspirace (1948) is the love story between a harlequin and his columbine and is done entirely with glass puppets.
As part of the Film Studies Center’s Direct + Present Documentary Series we will show Film Adventurer Karel Zeman in the Screening Room at the Reva and David Logan Center for Arts at 7:00pm. This biographical film looks back at the life, work and significance of one of the geniuses of world cinema. The documentary uses clips from Zeman’s films, interviews with contemporary filmmakers, and follows present-day film students as they try to recreate his non-digital special effects. Ludmila Zeman and Linda Zeman-Spaleny (Zeman’s daughter and granddaughter) will introduce the film and take questions following the screening.
