Scholarship for Summer School of Slavonic Studies in Poděbrady, Czech Republic

The Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Chicago is pleased to announce the selection procedure for one scholarship of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport of the Czech Republic (MEYS) for participation in the 30th Summer School of Slavonic Studies in Poděbrady, Czech Republic, from July 1 to July 26, 2019, for applicants residing in the jurisdiction of Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Chicago (State of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin).

The Summer School of Slavonic Studies is designed for the general public, from beginners to more advanced students. At the beginning of the course, participants are received by a high-ranking official of Charles University in the historical and medieval Carolinum building in Prague.

This  course is designed as intensive with focus on the Czech language and area studies. The optional afternoon programme consists of lectures held in Czech and English, showing Czech films, cultural and sport activities as well as field trips and excursions. It takes place in the Poděbrady Study Centre, about 40 kms to the East from Prague. Weekend program includes excursions and trips to interesting places in the Czech Republic (price is not included in the scholarship).

At the end of the course, the participants will receive a certificate specifying the level of their knowledge of Czech (levels A1–B2 according to the Common European Framework  of Reference). This fact will be also acknowledged in the European Language Passport. The certificates will be received in the representative rooms of the castle in Poděbrady. The participants are also welcomed to sit for the Czech Language Certificate Exam at the end of July 2019 (the exam fee is not included in the scholarship, but participant of the Summer Scholl can get a discount). University and college students can receive a detailed description of the  course to be given credits by their home institution.

Minimum age requirement for attending courses is 18 years (applicant has to reach the age of 18 on the first day of the Summer School at the latest).

Scholarship includes:

·        Free board and lodging (incl. breakfast, lunch and dinner),

·        Coverage of course fees, incl. study materials,

·        Free access to cultural events, trips organized within a Summer School course,

Scholarship does not include:

·        International transport costs,

·        Health insurance costs.

·        Costs connected to visa issuance (US citizens do not need a visa for short study trips to the Czech Republic)

How to apply?

Applicants are requested to send:

1) filled in and signed application (see attachment) with marked option “Poděbrady” on page No. 2,

2) Curriculum Vitae in English or Czech language

3) motivation letter in English or Czech language

4) a copy of his or her passport

5) recommendation letter from a Czech compatriot organization in the USA, a school or university with education of Czech language or a honorary consul of the Czech Republic (optional document)

by mail to the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Chicago, attention to consul Jan Kubišta, 205 North Michigan Avenue, Suite 1680, Chicago, Illinois 60601, USA, by March 10, 2019.  Please send also copies of all submitted documents to Jan Kubišta by e-mail to jan_kubista@mzv.cz . Subsequently, the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Chicago will nominate one selected candidate and maximally two substitute candidates to the MEYS.

Successful candidates will be contacted directly by the Summer School organizers.

A scholarship holder is obliged, once he/she obtains information on acceptance, to confirm his/her attendance at the Summer School. If an admitted scholarship-holder cannot attend the Summer School concerned, he/she is obliged to inform immediately the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (contact e-mail: lucie.gregurkova@msmt.cz) or the relevant contact person at the Summer School.

Attendance:

The application contains applicant’s declaration that he/she intends to utilise the entire scholarship and attend classes during the whole length of the course. In case the scholarship holder misses more than 4 days of the course the place on the course may be offered to a substitute candidate.

If an admitted scholarship-holder cannot attend the Summer School concerned, he/she is obliged to inform the MEYS (lucie.gregurkova@msmt.cz) and the relevant contact person at the Summer School immediately.

If any country does not utilize the offered places, the MEYS can provide these unused scholarships to candidates from other partner countries.
