Balkan Rhythms: Lecture, Workshop, Performance, and Exhibit by Chicago Folkdance Ensemble "Balkanski Igri"

April 7, 2024 | 1:00PM
Ida Noyes Hall, Third Floor Theater

1pm Lecture: The most characteristic feature of Balkan music are its uneven beats: 9/8, for example. Galia Kuo will demonstrate the emic concept of the uneven rhythm - all of them are combinations of quick and slow (or long and short) beats (steps). She will then teach the students to recognize, count, and tap the beats.

2pm Workshop: The ensemble will teach the students the steps of some of the most popular dances.

3pm Performance: The ensemble, usually dressed in folk dress, performs for the students, so they can experience up-close the full impact of the fast intricate real-life demonstration.

Exhibit: The ensemble lays out folk clothing - from headdress to foot coverings - and other everyday objects for display.

This event is free and open to the public.
